Richard Wright

Quote

"If we had been allowed to participate in the vital processes of America's national growth, what would have been the texture of our lives, the pattern of our traditions, the routine of our customs, the state of our arts, the code of our laws; the function of our government! Whatever others may say, we black folk say that America would have been stronger and greater!"

The Freedom Riders are an important group to think about when visiting Jackson and its history as they made stops there in their activism.

In spirit of arriving in Jackson I will listen to this song by Kid Rock although it lacks historic background and significance.

Jackson - By Johnny Cash is something worth listening to if you are ever making a trip to Jackson.

In Jackson, Mississippi, Malaco Records found its prominence and one cause of that was Misty Blue by Dorothy Moore which I will also listen to when thinking about the historic value of R&B music and how many artists orginated from here.

David Porter is another artist I would listen to as the Blues genre of music is very important to the southern culture

The last genre I want to make sure I listen to is Gospel which will be by The Edwin Hawkins Singers in the 1960s.

Nina Simone was a strong and passionate musician who was one of many who used their music to advance the cause of the Civil Rights Movement. This song is one I think should be an underlay for all this trip is about as it is a trek to rediscover what really took place that Wright was mentioning in his novel.
